Dates Set for State Monitoring of South River Dept. of Special Education Announced

The New Jersey Department of Special Education will be visiting the South River School District to determine the district’s compliance

with state and federal regulations concerning special education.

Wednesday, December 5th:

There will be a Public Forum meeting held from 6:30-9pm at the South River High School Auditorium.

This meeting will be run by the State Dept. of Education and its’ purpose will be to gather information from students and parents on all dealings with the South River Department of Special Education. It is very important that you attend and tell the State Dept. of Education of any problems you may have experienced within the special education system in South River as well as any positive experiences that you think the district & state should be aware of and support. The State Dept. of Education will be keeping the information you offer in mind as it monitors the school on site in January 2002 so it is important that you attend and voice your concerns.

January 15th & 16th:

The State Dept. of Education will be in the school system on theses two days randomly reviewing student’s files. They may contact you by telephone with questions concerning your child and the South River Dept. of Special Education. If you are contacted, please answer all their questions to the best of your abilities.

It is only with your help that we can improve the quality of special education in South River.

The Middlesex County Special Child Health Service will be offering a free workshop on raising the self-esteem of children with special needs on

Thursday, Nov. 15th

7:30pm at the

East Brunswick Public Library.

Special Guest Speaker will be Helen Knee

The Special Education PTA and the Developmental Disabilities Council will be presenting a free workshop on

By attending this workshop you will learn more information about the self-assessment process every school is required to complete as well as information on the corrective action plan and the monitoring phase to be completed by the State of New Jersey.
